John's father was James Jossey and his mother was Margaret Or Peggy Whitaker. His maternal grandparents were John Whitaker and Olive Taylor. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Olive Taylor, Margaret Or Peggy, Mary and Sarah. He died in 1802 in Halifax, NC.¹
