Sydney was born in 1847 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Sydney's father was Asbury Gillenwaters and her mother was Elizabeth Kinkead. Her paternal grandparents were William Gillenwaters and Sarah; her maternal grandparents were Williams Kinkead and Nancy Gibbons. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Smith, James Epps, William, Samuel G., Nancy Ann, Sarah Jane and Mary E.. She was the oldest of the eight children.-
