His paternal grandparents were Robert Gamble and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were William McCarty and Rachel Kyle. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William Porter Mccarty, James Darby, Czarine and Narcissa M.. He was the second youngest of the five children.-
