His paternal grandparents were William Fitz William and Agnes De Metham; his maternal grandparents were Edmund Deincourt and Isabel De Mohun. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, John, Thomas, Robert, Margaret, Joan, Isabel, Agnes and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the ten children.-
