Robert's father was Thomas Cotton and his mother was Sarah Dew. His maternal grandparents were John Dew and Susannah Shearer. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Charles, William, Martha, Mary, Patience, Priscilla and Sarah. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named William, John, Joseph and Sarah.-
