Mary's father was Thomas Cotton and her mother was Sarah Dew. Her maternal grandparents were John Dew and Susannah Shearer. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Robert, William, Martha, Patience, Priscilla and Sarah. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named William, John, Joseph and Sarah.-
