Mahalia was born about 1883 in ,,Illinois.1 Mahalia's father was Patrick Cleary and her mother was Catherine Murphy. Her maternal grandparents were Dennis Murphy and Martha Jane Bell. She had a brother and three sisters, named Dennis, Lovina, Martha Jane and Minnie. She was the youngest of the five children.
