Ann was born in 1837 in ,Bourbon, Kentucky.1 Ann's father was Joseph Helm Clay and her mother was Amanda Fitz Allen Scott. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Clay and Margaret Helm; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Scott and Elizabeth Cunningham. She had three brothers and a sister, named Henry, Samuel, Isaac C. and Margaret. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
