Joseph was born about 1720 in ,Chowan, NC.1 Joseph's father was William Bryant and his mother was Patience Dew. His paternal grandparents were James Bryant and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were John Dew and Susannah Shearer. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Margaret, Sarah, Rachel and Patience. He was the second oldest of the six children.-
