His paternal grandparents were Charles Henry Blankenship and Elizabeth Gough; his maternal grandparents were Melchiah K. Baldridge and Susannah N. Stewart. He had six brothers and three sisters, named James H., John Thomas, Vincent, Wesley Edward, Joseph, Albert, Martha Margaret Jean, Mary and Ally. He was the second youngest of the ten children.
