Theny was born in 1875 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Theny's father was Augustus G. Arnott and her mother was Louisa C. Louderback. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Arnott and Emeline Grigsby. She had three brothers named John, James D. and William J.. She was the second youngest of the four children.-
