James was born about 1824 in Hawkins Co., Tennessee.1 James' father was John Armstrong and his mother was Mary Charles. His maternal grandparents were James Charles and Dorcas Miller. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Clinton, John, Wiley, Dorcas Jane, Mary B., Katherine, Millie, Tabitha, Eliza and Louisiana G.. He was the oldest of the eleven children.-
