Charles Whitfield was born in 1845 in Paradise Twp., Lancaster Co., PA. Charles Whitfield's father was George Lewis Eckert and his mother was Sarah Jane Slaymaker. His maternal grandparents were John, Jr. Slaymaker and Jeannett McIlvaine. He had four brothers and four sisters, named George H., Howard, Nathaniel, Albert, Mary Jane, Susan C., Lavinia and Elizabeth. He was the third youngest of the nine children.
