THE 100 YEARS WAR (1337-1453):
France and Scotland joined forces against England. The war started in 1337 when Edward III refused to pay liege homage to King Philip VI of France whose right to the throne Edward contested. Significant battles included Crecy, Poitiers and the siege of Calais.
THE BATTLE OF CRECY, 26 AUG 1346
Edward III's English army was badly outnumbered 3-1, but a significant portion of his troops were highly-trained yeoman archers armed with English longbows, which had a range of 250-300 yards. It marked the first major battle of bowmen versus knights. The French forces of Philip VI expected to meet the English knights in the usual combat on horseback, but the English dismounted. Edward's sixteen-year-old son called "The Black Prince" for the color of his armor commanded the wing, and was knighted on the battlefield for his valor. The French repeatedly charged the English lines, only to be decimated by barrages of arrows. French casualties were estimated at 5,000-10,000 men while the English lost a few hundred. The longbow made traditional chivalric battles obsolete and changed the way wars were fought for the next 50 years.
THE SIEGE OF CALAIS, 1346-7
Edward III laid siege to the small town of Calais, located on the coast of the English Channel. After 11 months, Edward offered to end the siege if several of the town's wealthiest citizens would agree to sacrifice their lives and bring him the keys to the city. Six burghers, hungry and reduced to rags, nooses about their necks, presented themselves to the king. Queen Philippa was so moved, she pleaded with Edward to spare them and lift the siege. He did so. In 1895, to commemorate the event, the town of Calais commissioned a sculpture called "The Burghers of Calais" by August Rodin.
