Clinton was born in 1829 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Clinton's father was Robert Douglas Young and his mother was Sarah McCarty. His paternal grandparents were Robert Young and Phebe Douglas; his maternal grandparents were William McCarty and Rachel Kyle. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Arthur, James Harvey, William, Douglas, John, McCarty, Luther, Joseph, Sarah, Leah, Margaret and Phebe. He had two half-brothers, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender named Robert Douglas, Porter and Young.-
