James was born in 1871 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. James' father was Malin Winstead and his mother was Elizabeth Lawson. His paternal grandparents were John Winstead and Fanny Lawson; his maternal grandparents were George Washington Lawson and Melvina Jane Cook. He had four brothers named William, Sidney, George and John. He was the oldest of the five children.-
