His paternal grandparents were Larkin Willis and Mary Reese; his maternal grandparents were William Stapleton and Elizabeth Sizemore. He had six brothers and four sisters, named James Madison Dalton, William, Iredell Campbell, Marquis De Lafayette, Perry C., Tivis R., Mary Ann, Annis R., Somerville Richards and Penelope E. R.. He was the third youngest of the eleven children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Larkin W., Wilson W., Moses, Martha and Elizabeth.-
