Her paternal grandparents were John Whitaker and Martha Gough; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Cary and Elizabeth Hinde. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, Cary, Elizabeth, Temperance and Martha. She was the oldest of the seven children.-
