Roena was born in October 1850 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Roena's father was Abraham West and her mother was Mahaley. She had three brothers and six sisters, named William, Abraham, James, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Jane, Vina, Ann and Martha.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
