Martha was born in 1844 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Martha's father was Abraham West and her mother was Mahaley. She had three brothers and six sisters, named William, Abraham, James, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Jane, Vina, Ann and Roena.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
