Melvina Jane was born in 1827 in Scott County, Virginia. Melvina Jane's father was Drury Ward and her mother was Elizabeth Prater. She had five brothers and a sister, named William, Stephen, Cyrus, Simon Peter, Elbert S. and Martha R.. She was the oldest of the seven children.
