Martha was born in 1843 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Martha's father was Benjamin Walker Vaughn and her mother was Martha Simmons. Her paternal grandparents were James Vaughn and Elizabeth; her maternal grandparents were Christian Simon Or Simmons and Catherine Amend Or Ammons. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Samuel, Benjamin, Benjamin, Robert Or Aaron, Lucinda, Susan and Martha. She was the second youngest of the nine children.-
