Benjamin was born in 1834 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Benjamin's father was Benjamin Walker Vaughn and his mother was Martha Simmons. His paternal grandparents were James Vaughn and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Christian Simon Or Simmons and Catherine Amend Or Ammons. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Samuel, Benjamin, Robert Or Aaron, Lucinda, Susan, Martha and Martha. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.-
