Amanda was born in 1870 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Amanda's father was Thomas Spires Or Spears and her mother was Orlena Barr Or Bare. Her paternal grandparents were Gillam Spires Or Spears and Elizabeth Everhart. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Charley, Joseph, Henry, Sarah and Mary. She was the second youngest of the six children.
