John E. was born on June 22nd, 1896 in , , Tennessee. John E.'s father was George W. Shipley and his mother was Mary Elizabeth McKenzie. His paternal grandparents were Nathan Roller Shipley and Mary Ann Fansler; his maternal grandparents were John M. McKenzie and Mary Ann McCorkle. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Ora Nathan, Samuel Roller, James Hiram, Della Dixon, Cordie Ann, Etta Harrison, Lena Ethel, Goldie Mae and Mary Mable. He was the third youngest of the ten children. He died about 1897 in , , Tennessee.-
