Margaret was born on August 12th, 1812 in , Harrison, Kentucky. Margaret's father was Joseph Shawhan and her mother was Sarah Ewalt. Her paternal grandparents were Daniel Shawhan and Margaret Bell; her maternal grandparents were Henry Ewalt and Elizabeth Frye. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry Ewalt, John, Daniel, William, Sarah Elizabeth and Rebecca. She was the third youngest of the seven children.-
