Daniel was born in 1812 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. Daniel's father was Joseph Shawhan and his mother was Sarah Ewalt. His paternal grandparents were Daniel Shawhan and Margaret Bell; his maternal grandparents were Henry Ewalt and Elizabeth Frye. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Henry Ewalt, John, William, Sarah Elizabeth, Margaret and Rebecca. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.-
