Barbara was born in 1794 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.  Barbara's father was Elias Gotlieb Schonecker and her mother was Katherine Susong.  Her maternal grandparents were Andrew Susong and Barbara. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Andrew, John, William, Elijah, James King, Jacob Susong, Sophia, Elizabeth, Sarah and Louisiana.  She was the oldest of the eleven children.
