James was born about 1741 in , Guilford, North Carolina.  James' father was Hugh Porter and his mother was Violet Mackey. He had five brothers and a sister, named Hugh, Andrew, Henry, Lancelot, John and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died in 1778.
