Amanda was born in 1846 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Amanda's father was Pleasant Murrell and her mother was Susan Trent. She had five brothers named James Orville, Harvey G., William, Joel and Sampson.  She was the second oldest of the six children. She had a half-sister named Alice.
