Reason was born in 1865 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Reason's father was Martin Valley Monroe and his mother was Sarah E. Wells. His paternal grandparents were Asa Monroe and Sarah. He had two brothers and a sister, named Robert N., George C. and Nancy E.. He was the second youngest of the four children.
