His paternal grandparents were Richard Mitchell and Elizabeth Saunders; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Rogers and Mary Amis. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard Pinckney, James Galbraith, Clinton A., Stokely Donaldson, Martha, Alice and Amelia. He was the youngest of the eight children.-
