Mary Martha was born in 1855 in , , IL. Mary Martha's father was Elijah M. Manis and her mother was Mary Ann Murrell. Her paternal grandparents were Elijah Manis and Agnes Anderson. She had two brothers and six sisters, named William Riley, John Tiger, Elizabeth Ann, Nancy Jane, Amelia, Lucy, Margaret and Caroline. She was the second youngest of the nine children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Daniel Jackson, Joseph and Mary Sarah.-
