John was born about 1760 in , Botecourt, Virginia. John's father was Absalom Looney and his mother was Margaret Or Peggy. His paternal grandparents were Robert Looney and Elizabeth. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named Michael, Peter, Jonathan, Absalom, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, Ruth, Ann, Catherine and Priscilla. He was the sixth oldest of the thirteen children.-
