Sarah was born in 1845 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Sarah's father was Gawin Leeper and her mother was Elizabeth H.. Her paternal grandparents were Francis Leeper and Elizabeth Littlejohn. She had a brother and two sisters, named Hannibal, Susan and Abenaida. She was the second oldest of the four children. She had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Francis, Josiah, Jesse, Gawen, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary.-
