Mary was born in 1828 in , Hawkins, TN.  Mary's father was Hennus Lawson and her mother was Jailey. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Newton, William, Martin, Joseph, Elizabeth, Jane, Martha and Mariah.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
