Martin Monroe was born in 1852 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Martin Monroe's father was George Washington Lawson and his mother was Melvina Jane Cook.  His paternal grandfather was Martin Lawson. He had four brothers and three sisters, named George W., William Asbury, Robert Lee, James Patton, Elizabeth, Cornelia and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
