John A. was born in April 1870 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. John A.'s father was Tivis Klepper and his mother was Julia A. Isenberg. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Klepper and Mary Loudermilch; his maternal grandparents were John Isenberg and Martha. He had a brother and four sisters, named Samuel, Martha, Mary, Emily and Sarah. He was the second oldest of the six children.-
