His paternal grandparents were James Isbell and Elizabeth Birdwell; his maternal grandparents were John Rousseau and Martha. He had four brothers and three sisters, named David Zachary, John Birdwell, James Levi, Benjamin, Ellen C., Mary Alabama and Martha Elizabeth. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.-
