Her paternal grandparents were James Isbell and Elizabeth Birdwell; her maternal grandparents were John Rousseau and Martha. She had five brothers and two sisters, named David Zachary, John Birdwell, Reuben R., James Levi, Benjamin, Ellen C. and Mary Alabama. She was the third youngest of the eight children.-
