Samuel Morgan was born about 1760 in , Halifax, North Carolina. Samuel Morgan's father was John Hobgood and his mother was Frances Morgan. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hobgood and Elizabeth; his maternal grandfather was Samuel Morgan. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Lemuel, Elijah, Micajah, John, William, Phereba, Frances, Elizabeth, Ruthemah and Penelpha (Penelope). He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.-
