Micajah was born about 1758 in , Halifax, North Carolina. Micajah's father was John Hobgood and his mother was Frances Morgan. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hobgood and Elizabeth; his maternal grandfather was Samuel Morgan. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Lemuel, Elijah, Samuel Morgan, John, William, Phereba, Frances, Elizabeth, Ruthemah and Penelpha (Penelope). He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.-
