Pleasant was born in 1832 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Pleasant's father was Richard Grantham and his mother was Margaret. His paternal grandparents were Richard Grantham and Frances Amis. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Alice, Frances, Mary and Jane. He was the second oldest of the six children.-
