George was born on April 22nd, 1787 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.  George's father was Philip Grandstaff and his mother was Elizabeth Hass.  His paternal grandparents were George Grandstaff Bishoff and Hass. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, Benjamin, Philip, Jonathan E., Samuel, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Mary E., Katherine and Grandstaff.
