Sarah was born on April 6th, 1811 in Rogersville, Hawkins, Tennessee. Sarah's father was Thomas Gillenwater and her mother was Mary Mallory Wilkins. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Gillenwater and Martha; her maternal grandparents were William Wilkins and Elizabeth Terrell. She had four brothers and five sisters, named William Terrell, Robert Wilkins, Joel, Thomas Jefferson, Elizabeth, Martha Or Patsy, Nancy, Rachel and Mary Ann. She was the youngest of the ten children.-
