Mary was born in 1831 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary's father was Thomas Jefferson Gillenwater and her mother was Mary. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Gillenwater and Mary Mallory Wilkins. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Shelby, Thomas, Eleanor and Sarah. She was the third oldest of the five children.-
