Mary J. was born in 1859 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary J.'s father was John Gilbert and her mother was Adaline. Her paternal grandparents were Harvey G. Gilbert and Nancy. She had a brother and three sisters, named E. D. S., Elizabeth, Emeline and Mahala. She was the second oldest of the five children.
