Mahala was born in 1864 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee.  Mahala's father was John Gilbert and her mother was Adaline.  Her paternal grandparents were Harvey G. Gilbert and Nancy. She had a brother and three sisters, named E. D. S., Elizabeth, Mary J. and Emeline.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
