Mary was born in 1868 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary's father was George W. Fansler and her mother was Elizabeth Anderson. Her paternal grandparents were David Fansler and Mary Shipley. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William Clinton, David R., Enoch, Dimon, Margaret, Rachel and Sarah. She was the third oldest of the eight children.-
