Katherine was born in 1829 in Of, Hawkins, TN. Katherine's father was Winston Elkins and her mother was Elizabeth. Her paternal grandfather was Ralph Elkins. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Albert, Ralph, Henry, Mary, Sarah and Nancy. She was the oldest of the seven children.
